Google announced at Google I/O 2021 that it would bring a number of new features to Android 12, including the digital car key technology. In keeping with that promise, Google has released a digital car key technology on android.
Google has already confirmed the release of the Digital Car Key feature in a blogs post. But sadly, now it’s only live for Google Pixel 6 Pro, Pixel 6, and Samsung Galaxy S21. Currently, it’s only designed to work with a few compatible BMW cars.
Google has said about digital car key technology that it will work using ultra-wideband technology (UWB). As a result, users will be able to unlock their cars with their phones in their pockets.
But phones that don’t have UWB technology can work using NFC chips, in this case, you have to unlock the car by tapping on the phone. If there are multiple users in a car, there is nothing to worry about because there are ways to share virtual keys.
Although the technology is only available on the Google Pixel 6, Pixel 6 pro, and Samsung Galaxy S21 devices, according to Google’s blog post. But it will be updated for other phones soon.
The same goes for cars, now only for BMW, but will soon be dealt with by other car companies. However, so far it is heard that this technology will be able to use in all BMW models released between 2020 and 2022.
Currently, this digital car technology is supported for use in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, the Netherlands, France, Italy, South Korea, Spain, and many more.
In addition to the digital car keys technology, some more features are being added to Android 12. These include, Google Assistant has been made easier to use while driving, and Google Assistant has also been updated.
Google Media has added a quick search function, which makes it easy for users to search for songs. Google is also bringing some more widgets for apps. These include a YouTube music widget with good playback control, Google Play Books widget, Google Photos People & Pets widget.
